The 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act marks progress in ensuring access to information and technology for people with disabilities

Posted on September 19, 2023

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act, a law made in 1973. This law makes sure that people with disabilities can use federal programs and have jobs. The federal government updated the law in 1986 with Section 508. Section 508 makes sure that information and communication technology (ICT) in the federal sector is easy for everyone to use. The U.S. Access Board makes rules for this and keeps them up to date. They make sure ICT works with tools that help people with disabilities. The U.S. Access Board also helps people with questions and provides resources.
