Remembering Julie Beckett
Nearly ten years before the Americans with Disabilities Act became law and nearly 20 years before the Supreme Court ruled in Olmstead v. L.C. that people with disabilities have the right to receive care in the most integrated settings appropriate, Ms. Beckett fought successfully to give her daughter the chance to grow up at home rather than in the hospital. She was a committed advocate for disability rights throughout her life. Ms. Beckett died on May 13 at her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
