Senators call for digital update to Department of Transportation’s service animal flight form

Posted on January 23, 2024

  • Senators Wyden and Duckworth think the Department of Transportation (DOT) is making it harder for people with service animals to travel.
  • They want the DOT to use an easier, accessible online service animal travel form instead of the current difficult paperwork.
  • The required form is currently only offered in a PDF format and is hard to use with mobile devices or screen readers.  The department only encourages airlines to use accessible web formats, like HTML, for the form.
  • They also want a helpline for people who have problems with the DOT’s forms.
  • The DOT is not following the laws that say government websites and technology should be easy for everyone to use.
  • There are other problems with the DOT’s service animal travel form, like having to fill out a new form for every trip.
  • American Airlines has a good system where passengers get a service animal number for a year, so they don’t have to fill out the form every time.
  • Senator Wyden wants to make more digital services accessible.
