Snow Removal and Access to Small Businesses

Snow removal is a fact of life for people in many parts of the United States. A slide show presentation by the Great Plains ADA Center titled Snow Removal and Accessibility: Quick Tips for Small Businesses talks about how snow and improper snow removal can be  a problem for people with disabilities. The slide show has some guidelines for small business owners to remove snow in a way that gives full access to everyone, including:

  • Don’t push snow into accessible parking spots or access aisles
  • Accessible routes should be fully clear of ice and snow
  • All ramps should be cleared, preferably first
  • Pretreat ramps for ice and snow
  • Provide extra deep pile doormats to stop snow puddles
  • Provide wipes and assistance to help people clean ice and snow pretreatment from
wheelchair wheels and service dog paws
