Supporting the mental health of workers who are members of marginalized communities

Posted on May 15, 2024

The Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN) has a new web page, Mental Health and Marginalized Communities.  It provides information about supporting the mental health of workers who are members of marginalized communities and provides action steps for employers.  These steps include:

  • Build trust and make sure there is privacy and confidentiality when an employee discloses their condition
  • Be aware of things that impact employees’ mental health outside the workplace
  • Recognize the diversity of each cultural group
  • Create partnerships and clear communication channels
  • Provide culturally responsive mental health services and training
  • Provide flexible work options
  • Add additional mental health benefits
  • Consider language needs when developing mental health resources
  • Get leadership buy-in
  • Set up DEI programs that include disability and mental health in policies and practices
