ADA National Network Learning Session: Tools and Resources to Promote Healthcare Access for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Description

This webinar will explore barriers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) encounter in accessing healthcare services and some best practices that providers can adopt to better serve this population. The speakers will share some themes from their recent interviews and surveys of people with IDD, caregivers, and practitioners. They will also share a recent tool they created to help healthcare providers assess their inclusiveness and create a customized action plan to address disparities.

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand obstacles people with intellectual and developmental disabilities face in receiving accessible and inclusive healthcare services.
  2. Discover the most common areas where healthcare services can improve the patient experience for individuals with IDD.
  3. Learn about resources and tools designed to support providers as they treat individuals with IDD.

Presenters

Dr. Brenda A. Leath is a biomedical ethicist and health policy strategist who serves as the Executive Director of the Center to Advance Community Health & Equity at the Public Health Institute. She spearheads transformative initiatives that catalyze systemic change in pursuit of health equity.

With a distinguished 30-year career, she has earned prestigious appointments, held executive leadership roles, and received recognition across the public and private sectors for her contributions to advance health equity.

Jerri Davison is the Director of the Center on Disability and the Pacific ADA Center, both housed at the Public Health Institute. Jerri has spent her career in the disability rights field.

Jerri’s areas of expertise include Olmstead and the Americans with Disabilities Act’s integration mandate, the overuse of guardianship, and employment and healthcare access for individuals with disabilities. As a person with psychiatric disabilities, Jerri is passionate about the importance of people with disabilities leading the way in developing any policies or practices that impact them.
