The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Final Rule Implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a Final Rule updating HHS’ implementing regulation for Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act concerning programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance. This Final Rule will help ensure that people with disabilities served by federally funded health and human services programs receive equitable care and treatment. The Final Rule contains a number of edits to ensure consistency with updated judicial and legislative requirements, including those contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additionally, the Final Rule contains new sections to help ensure nondiscrimination in health and human services programs and activities. Learning objectives:
Presenters:Maggie Hart is a Policy Advisor in the Office for Civil Rights at HHS. She is an advocate, an attorney, and a woman with a disability. Prior to joining HHS OCR, Maggie was Senior Counsel with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and, before that, she was a Staff Attorney at Disability Rights DC, the protection and advocacy organization for individuals with disabilities in the District of Columbia. John Thompson is a Policy Advisor for the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. He has investigated allegations of civil rights violations in public and private entities across the United States, negotiated settlement agreements, and helped draft regulations and guidance concerning discrimination based on race, color, national origin, disability, sex, and age.
